Grand Central at Kennedy, a massive mixed-use development in downtown Tampa’s Channel district, is moving forward with a $1.7 million courtyard renovation.
The courtyard currently provides outdoor seating for the bars and restaurants on the street level of Grand Central, including Pour House, Ginger Beard Coffee, Cena and City Dog Cantina. The renovation will build a new outdoor bar and kitchen for Cena, outdoor bars for Pour House and City Dog and common dining space for Poke Co. and Gelato-Go.
Grand Central was the first major development in the Channel district, and the courtyard is one of the neighborhood’s original social hubs.
“It may seem crazy to launch a project for a social gathering area amidst the current circumstances, but if you are going to rip up what we have and inconvenience everyone I can’t think of a better time than right now,” developer Ken Stoltenberg wrote in an email. “The dust is going to settle, things will return to normal, and this project is going to move forward, period. And it is going to be spectacular when completed.”
Demolition is set to begin today, and the courtyard will be blocked off for the duration of construction, though the sidewalks surrounding the courtyard will remain open.
The courtyard won’t be the only active construction in Grand Central. A new CVS Health store is under construction in a vacant storefront along Meridian Avenue.
Stoltenberg is also the developer of the Channel Club, an apartment tower that includes downtown’s Publix Super Markets Inc., and is moving forward on the second phase of the Channel Club, which would build hundreds of apartments on the JH Williams Oil Co. site.
