A Time to Listen

A Message from the Tampa Downtown Partnership
The vision statement of the Tampa Downtown Partnership is clear; be a leader in fostering a vibrant, diverse downtown neighborhood. As you can see, the word diversity is woven into our fabric and stands at the core of who we are and what we want to accomplish. Failing to support and celebrate a diverse community means we have failed. We are saddened and deeply sympathetic to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others who have lost loved ones. Our mission statement should stand as a constant message to all, that the Tampa Downtown Partnership and its collective members stand firm in the belief that racism and injustice have no place in our community. Downtowns represent the heart of a city, where people gather, and where capital and ideas coalesce.

The events of the past two weeks have made for some uncomfortable conversations. But that is probably a good thing and these conversations are long overdue. What we would ask, is that you take a minute to listen to those who have felt locked out. Listen to those who have been discriminated against. Listen to those who live in fear and don’t believe our great country represents them.

There is real complexity to this moment, an intersection of race, rights, law enforcement, and history. We support our Tampa Police Department and the men and women who go to work every day to ensure our Downtown is safe. We also support the call for justice in moments of injustice. The work of this moment is to find and support the integrity of both.

The Tampa Downtown Partnership Board, staff, community stakeholders, and members stand together to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through self-reflection and re-examining our past, we commit to the challenging work necessary for progress and the brightest future for a Tampa that includes everyone.

We can do better and are committed to listening and working to ensure that Tampa’s Downtown is a place for everyone to live, work, play, and learn. We ask that you do the same.
