Westworld is on everybody’s mind right now, thanks to its revival as an HBO series. That’s all we have to say about that, unfortunately, because we haven’t seen it. We work for a nonprofit movie theatre; you think we have HBO?
But the 1973 film was forerunner for a lot more than one cable series. Written and directed by Michael Crichton, Westworld grounded a lot of the ideas he had earlier explored in his novel and movie The Andromeda Strain, and would later bring to a climax in Jurassic Park — science and technology gone wild, terrorizing (or straight-up killing) the foolish humans who sought to control it. What’s the scarier amusement-park-attraction-that-kills-the-guests: the T. Rex from Jurassic Park, or the implacable Gunslinger in all black (played by the magnetic Yul Brenner, in one of his final roles — and based on his character from The Magnificent Seven)? It was also the first feature film to use computer-generated special effects. In the end, bad CGI is sort of the apotheosis and realization of Crichton’s whole body of work. We can definitively say more people have suffered from terrible computer effects than have been eaten by dinosaurs. Come see Westworld: boy, have we got a REWIND for you
