Event Details

In Sword of Trust, the latest film from indie director Lynn Shelton (Outside In, Your Sister’s Sister), Michaela Watkins (from SNL) plays Mary, the partner of Cynthia (Jillian Bell, Workaholics, 22 Jump Street), who is expecting to inherit her late grandfather’s house. She doesn’t get the house – bad luck – but she does get a sword that, according to a bizarre letter written by her dead, dotty, and semi-destitute grandfather, is a relic that proves the South actually won the Civil War.

In an attempt to at least score some kind of money out of the deal, Mary and Cynthia take the sword to a pawn shop where the owner Mel (Marc Maron, WTF with Marc Maron, GLOW) and his wastoid employee add up that the sword would be worth a lot of money to a certain species of right-wing conspiracy nuts. Pretty soon, the four are teaming up to sell the sword to a group of questionable men, and questioning their own intentions in doing so. It’s a throwback to the awkward-funny, character-driven, mumbling comedies of the late ’90s, and its focus on performance and willingness to trust its actors amalgamates into a bright, light, droll film about the landscape of latter-day American anxieties.
