5/16/18: The Ride of Silence.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 10 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
BLACK ARMBANDS ENCOURAGED
Tampa Downtown Area
Contact: Drew Hunter
It starts from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa, goes past the Tampa Police Department’s headquarters, three Hillsborough County courthouses, and the County Center office building to send a strong message to local government officials that we demand safer streets for everyone. The route also passes the ghost bikes (Unfortunatley, all since removed) for LeRoy Collins Jr. and Diane Vega and the site where Peiter Vanvliet was killed on March 19, 2011.
We’ve had a few comments on police escort being overkill.
While we will have police escort the majortiy of the support is from the bicycle mounted officers helping us out. We will need to stop for stop signs, red lights and the like – in short, follow the rules of the road. We’d rather have those come out that feel they need that level of protection than not.
Not up to riding or want to support more?
While the ride is free, the RoS organization does still have costs, you can help defray those AND support the Ride of Silence — even if you don’t ride a bike. Very minor expenses here, but the national organization at http://www.rideofsilence.org/ does have needs and is a fully qualified charity.
NOTE: We’ve got to take weather into account in FL – The Ride of Silence will take place rain or shine, but not if there’s a special light show going on. We will ride in a light rain, but not if thunderstorms are lurking. Our thunderstorm date is Saturday, May 19th, 10 AM at same starting point. Route and other details will also be the same.
