The Henry B. Plant Museum is proud to present “Music and D.H. Stubblebine,” a lecture by Dr. George C. Foreman. This lecture is the first in a series of programs and events throughout 2019 celebrating the 200th anniversary of Henry B. Plant’s birth. Visit the Museum on Sunday, February 3rd, at 3 pm for this in depth examination of D. H. Stubblebine, the orchestra leader at the Tampa Bay Hotel for its first five years, 1891-1896.
Stubblebine was instrumental in assembling a talented group of musicians that performed regularly at the Tampa Bay Hotel and the Inn at Port Tampa. He can be now considered a model for how a “working musician” made his living during the second half of the 19th century. In addition to conducting the orchestra, Stubblebine also arranged pieces for performance and was an accomplished performer.
In addition to information on Stubblebine’s life and the music of the era, this event will include live music performances on a cornet that belonged to Stubblebine himself. The performers are Randolph Lee, trumpet and cornet, and Jasmin Arakawa, piano. Lee is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Florida. He has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious concert venues including Carnegie Hall. Arakawa holds Doctor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from Indiana University and has performed widely in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
Dr. George C. Foreman is a faculty members at the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music and former director of the UGA Performing Arts Center. He is an internationally recognized authority on American wind band history and has conducted historic band concerts and lectured on band history throughout the United States and in more than a dozen other countries, most recently at the Spanish Brass Festival in Alzira, Spain, in July 2018.
“Music and D.H. Stubblebine” is a rare opportunity to learn more about the importance of music and entertainment at the Tampa Bay Hotel. Tickets are available now, $10 per person for non-members (includes same day Museum admission) and free for Museum Members. Advanced purchase is strongly encouraged as space is limited.
