Event Details

Fortunate Taylor was an African-American woman who owned over 30 acres of land in Tampa. Gloria Jean Royster is a researcher, author, and has dedicated much of her time to uncovering the details of Fortune Taylor’s life, and how it impacted and still impacts so many individuals.

Come join us as Ms. Royster takes us on journey exploring the significance of Fortune Taylor’s past with present-day Tampa. Our walk will take us to The Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, The David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and The Times Building. We’ll view the history plaque that tells her story on The Riverwalk Monument Trail, the Fortune Taylor Bridge, the St. Paul African Methodist Church, and other standing structures. The walk will last approximately 90 minutes, ending at the Historic Oaklawn Cemetery.
