Philosopher John Ruskin said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only different types of good weather.” Floridians may disagree. In sunny skies and dry weather, too much sun can lead to drought and wildfires. Too much rain? Residents flood. Florida is the US thunderstorm and lightning capital, bringing hail, wind, and flooding rain. Some of the worst tornado outbreaks occur in Florida, and 2016 and 2017 showed us it is “game on.”

Jennifer Collins, Associate Professor in Geosciences at USF, is President of the West Central Florida Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, former Chair of the Climate Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers and served on the National Weather Association’s Specialized Operations Committee on Tropical Cyclones. She obtained her PhD from University College London, United Kingdom and her BSc from Lancaster University. In addition to two books, she has over 35 published peer-reviewed papers. Interested in climatic and seasonal patterns, she also works in social sciences, examining human behavior in hurricane evacuations.

Charlie Paxton has raised a family, served in the U.S. Navy, earned degrees in meteorology and a doctorate degree in environmental science and policy, was certified as Consulting Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society, and had an amazing year career with the National Weather Service. He has authored numerous publications on weather and ocean phenomena and has provided weather support for the Super Bowl, Republican National Convention, stunt pilots, and emergency managers during hurricanes. Retired from National Weather Service after 37 years, he started Channelside Weather LLC to provide forecasts, decision support, and forensic weather analysis.

Join us as we delve into hurricanes, tornadoes, windstorms, hail, drought, wildfires, dense fog, climate change, and sea level rise, topics covered in our presenters’ new book new book, Florida Weather and Climate: More Than Just Sunshine.*
