Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) is bored with her suburban life. She lives vicariously through the adventures of Susan (Madonna), a woman she knows only through messages in the personal ads of the newspaper. But when she follows one of the ads into New York City and finds herself thrust into Susan’s life, strung along into a different world through a breadcrumb trail of missing romances and mistaken identities, how will she react to having to go back to being herself?

Madonna is about due for another rediscovery. Every youth generation gets its own version of Madonna; she’s famous for self-reinvention. But back when there had only been one Madonna, this was the version we had – a personality initially accused of dangerous sexual promiscuity that we would now recognize as a kind of revolutionary personal ownership of one’s own sexual life and identity. But although Madonna is what most people remember about Desperately Seeking Susan, there’s a lot more here to like. It showcases early performances from John Turturro, Steven Wright, Laurie Metcalf and a ton of cameos from big figures in the underground NYC music scene of the time like Richard Hell and Rockets Redglare.
