Event Details

Lantern-jawed king of horror Bruce Campbell plays Elvis (or someone who believes that he is Elvis), and iconic American actor and civil rights activist Ossie Davis plays JFK (see above) in Bubba Ho-Tep, a horror comedy about an Egyptian soul-sucking monster dressed like Billy Jack threatening the denizens of an East Texas nursing home. Actually, even though it says “comedy” up there, all of the funny comes out of the absurd and delightful premise; as the best farces are, it’s performed entirely straight-faced. Campbell and Davis both turn in tender, affecting performances that contemplate the nature of aging and the breakdown of their bodies in a serious way. Then they karate-fight a mummy. It’s that kind of movie. Sort of On Golden Pond meets Dawn of the Dead (but much, much better than that sounds), Bubba Ho-Tep sits proudly in the Campbell Canon alongside the Evil Dead series, and in a lot of ways exceeds the rest.
