This is not the best worst movie in the world; no, this is just a tribute. Troll 2 rocketed into our lives in 1990 and like all the worst rockets was completely ignored, made no impact at all and slipped silently beneath the waves of popular culture. But the early ‘90s were the salad days for lovers of crap, schlock and garbage — Mystery Science Theater 3000 was on the air, Joe Bob Briggs was still at the drive-in, horror hosts still presented reruns on weekend afternoons, and the nascent internet was starting to connect people who reveled in so-bad-they’re-good movies. Troll 2 was given the second chance that only those movies that are transcendentally bad deserve.
Best Worst Movie chronicles the making of, and eventual audience celebration of, a truly terrible movie. But specifically it’s the story of George Hardy, a dentist by trade and truly nice guy who played the dad in Troll 2. Even if you don’t know Troll 2, it’s fascinating as a story of a person who found a strange kind of fame thrust upon him, and what he decided to do with it. But if you do know Troll 2, you won’t want to miss this; you’re not just the audience, you’re the subject.
