Event Details

Photographer Chris Buck’s humorously twisted portraits of pop-culture icons are on view now at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

The exhibition, “Magnificent Hurt,” will run through March 16 at the downtown Tampa museum. Buck will speak about his work in a lecture at the museum on March 2 at 6 p.m. The lecture is free for members while regular museum admission fees apply for not-yet-members.

Buck is known for making his subjects uneasy and taking them out of their comfort zones to capture a stranger, more vulnerable side than their fans— or detractors — are accustomed to seeing.

Zora Carrier, Ph.D., FMoPA executive director, believes museum visitors will relate to Buck’s photos because they portray recognizable faces in new and never-before-seen ways.

“Portraiture is one of the oldest subject matters in the visual arts. Chris Buck’s work is a reminder that artists can be doing the same thing, and yet come up with completely different results. These portraits are easily distinguishable from any other approach to portraiture.”

Buck’s exhibition at FMoPA will also include a handful of photographs from his newest series, “Gentlemen’s Club,” featuring portraits of men who are romantically involved with exotic dancers, and from “Chris Buck’s Chris Bucks,” in which he photographed other men named Chris Buck.

“Magnificent Hurt” will be on view during regular museum operating hours and is included in the general admission price. Museum admission is free for members and $10 for not-yet-members.

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, located at 400 N. Ashley Dr., is dedicated to exhibiting important photographic art as central to contemporary life and culture. FMoPA collects preserves and exhibits historic and contemporary works by nationally and internationally known photographic artists.
