In a trajectory mirroring the Halloween series, Dream Warriors is another third movie that completely ignores the second and tries to get back to what made the original interesting. Creator Wes Craven came back to write this entry, and it shows — a direct-ish sequel to the first Nightmare, Dream Warriors has Freddy returning to haunt the children of the people who “killed” him many years ago. He’s even given a bit of an origin story. It doesn’t quite capture the suspense or thrills of the first movie, but the effects are delightful and highly memorable, the cast is surprising (Patricia Arquette! Laurence Fishburne! Briefly, Zsa Zsa Gabor!), and it was successful enough to make more sequels inevitable. Hollywood never gives up easily on a profitable idea.
