Hillsborough County, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2018)Hillsborough County’s Black Heritage Celebration Committee and the Office of Community Affairs will present the 24th Annual Black Heritage Celebration on Friday, Feb. 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at Joe Chillura Courthouse Square at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Pierce Street in downtown Tampa.

In observance of national Black History Month, Hillsborough County’s 24th Annual Black Heritage Celebration will highlight the achievements of African heritage and culture in Hillsborough County. An audience will gather for this year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Royal Heritage,” to enjoy music, dancing, and the presentation of the Maxine Douglas Legacy Award to Donald R. Odom, who served as Deputy County Attorney from 2005 until his retirement in 2012. Mr. Odom also served as the first African-American Assistant City Attorney with the City of St. Petersburg, and the first African-American Assistant District Counsel with the District V Office of the Florida Department of Health & Rehabilitative Services.

Other highlights of the Black Heritage Celebration include:

  • Music from the Hillsborough Community Choir
  • Cultural Dance by Seminole Charter High School
  • Poetry reading by Hillsborough County Poet Laureate James Tokley
  • Music from the Academy Prep Center of Tampa Choir
  • Hillsborough County Head Start

The Black Heritage Celebration is hosted by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners and the Black Heritage Celebration Committee. The event is free and open to the public.
