Maira Leticia Rivera Pinto paints about her love of nature and describes herself as a dreamy romantic always seeking for knowledge and inspiration. She has a love of gardening that is reflected throughout her work; particularly in the beautiful, somewhat surrealistic flowers and trees she paints. Her concern for the environment and the conservation of trees is shown in some of her colorful paintings titled Clash of the Environment and Do Not Take It.

FORBIDDEN BROADWAY is the longest-running musical revue in the world — now in its 35th year! Famous for its sharp spoofs of all things Broadway including show tunes, characters and plots of beloved musicals, this skewering of everything from Hamilton to The Lion King has audiences rolling in the aisles. Presented in the intimate Jaeb Theater, Forbidden Broadway takes on the big league, ripping the A-list shows from Matilda and The Book of Mormon to Once and Jersey Boys as well as the recent revivals of Les Misérables and Fiddler on the Roof. Nothing is sacred as this hilarious show twists its satiric knife into several old favorites including The Phantom of the Opera, Annie and Chicago. Celebrities are not immune, either, with spot-on impersonations of Patti LuPone, Sarah Brightman, Mandy Patinkin, Ethel Merman, Harvey Fierstein and many more.

PLEASE NOTE: Contains mild adult humor.

Jobsite is excited to bring back Shakespeare in another Cigar City setting: As You Like It will be set in present-day Tampa. 2015’s Twelfth Night, set in 1926 Ybor City, was one of Jobsite’s most successful productions of all time and the company is equally hopeful for this classic tale of love, lust and mistaken identity. Featuring some of the most famous lines penned in the English language, As You Like It subverts the traditional rules of romance. Gender roles, nature and politics all become a muddle in a clever and astute comedy that reflects on how bewildering yet utterly pleasurable life can be.

There is a 10-minute late seating hold at the top of this show. Arrive early and enjoy the soundtrack from New Granada Records!

Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers find themselves trapped in the deadly Montague-Capulet family feud. Defying family honor, they choose each other, taking their lives into their own hands. In this daring dance with fate, Romeo and Juliet seal their future in a secret marriage before everything takes a turn for the worse. Verona may be fair, but life isn’t. Gounod’s dark, intense music meets a masterful libretto true to the Bard’s first telling of this spellbinding tale of young love undone by foolish family pride.

Romeo and Juliet is sung in French with English translations projected above the stage.

Dorothea (Annette Bening) is a tough, wise, worldly woman who earned every one of her 55 years. In 1979, she sees the way the world is changing, moving from the peace-and-love ‘70s to the greed-is-good ‘80s, and she’s not too pleased to see it happen. But very little surprises her. Well, maybe one thing: Her son Jamie, age 15, is starting to become a man.

So she calls on the people in her life to help her in ushering in this new phase: Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a photographer who rents a room in her house; William (Billy Crudup), an itinerant mechanic and late-model hippie; and Julie (Elle Fanning), Jamie’s friend from childhood who’s dealing with her own teenage issues. She wants them to share their lives with him, and hopefully show them what the world can be: weird, scary, lovely, exciting. 20th Century Women is a kind of coming-of-age story once removed: Dorothea learns more about her friends and her son through the process of his unusual education, and all of them and their relationships on the precipice of 1980 seem to have a lot to say to us today.

Amy Morgan is a jazz vocalist who has been performing professionally in the Tampa Bay area for over eight years. She has sang venues large and small; from 17 piece big-band benefit shows to many intimate restaurant settings. She performed at Ruth Eckerd Hall before several concerts including Natalie Cole, Chris Botti, and Harry Connick Jr. Amy is a classically trained vocalist that began by singing opera in high school and college but later found her niche in jazz. Her sound is influenced by classic jazz divas like Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London but her unique styling of these vintage songs is what makes nostalgic audiences return to hear her.

Sometimes a good movie can make you reconsider something you always took for granted. Jaws made audiences afraid of the beach. Psycho made people afraid of taking showers. And Gone Girl asks: how well do you really know the people you love?

2014 film phenomenon Gone Girl (based on the 2012 novel of the same name) does what a lot of fantastic movies do: it transcends genre by mixing them in a novel combination. Part police procedural, part Fatal-Attraction-style relationship thriller, part old-fashioned mystery, and all put together with the crystalline flawlessness of its Gillian Flynn script and the queasy, voyeuristic, in-your-own-backyard dread of David Fincher’s direction, Gone Girl hammers its way into your mind and refuses to leave until long after it’s over.

Free screening of documentary film “I AM” downtown at The Portico.
1001 N. Florida Avenue, Tampa, FL 33602 –2nd Floor

I AM is an utterly engaging and entertaining non-fiction film that poses two practical and provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? The filmmaker behind the inquiry is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” “The Nutty Professor,” and “Bruce Almighty.” However, in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening to his prior life of excess and greed, and to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in the world.

Matewan is a fictionalized version of the real events of the Battle of Matewan in West Virginia in 1920. In those days The Stone Mountain Coal Company ran the town: they owned the mine, which was the only source of work in the area, setting hours and wages; they owned the homes all the workers lived in; and they ran the company store, where the workers (paid in scrip) were forced to buy all of their food and supplies at prices the Company set. When the workers start organizing, the Company responds by bringing in African-American and Italian workers by train, and replacing them — and in so doing, hoping to starve the townspeople out. But Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper), an organizer for the United Mine Workers sees what’s happening. Rather than letting the Company pit natives against newcomers, he sets out to get all of the new arrivals to join the union as well. The Company escalates the conflict, using spies and trying to encourage violence, but the burgeoning union resists.

Finally management brings in the Baldwin-Felts Detective agency to break the strike with their characteristic violence and terrorism. All that prevents the total dominance of the company and their agents is the pride of the mine workers standing together, the courage of the Matewan police chief, Smilin’ Sid Hatfield, and the good people of the town passing stories between themselves of times the little guy stood up to a bully and won.   As relevant now as the day it happened, things don’t end easy in the movie or in the real-life story of Matewan. Solidarity and the value of work still protect us. The history of the labor movement in the US is written in blood, sweat, and tears. But sweat and tears dry clear on the page — for that history to be legible to posterity, nothing works but blood. And having read it, we all grow wiser together.

This show is sponsored by the Florida Future Labor Leaders. Profits will benefit the Tampa Bay Area Chapter.

REWIND has a confession: we have never read a single interview or word of analysis of any of director Paul Verhoeven’s movies. So despite loving most of them (by the way, if you missed our showing of RoboCop, shame on you, but there’s more to come), we don’t know whether his sharp, perceptive, unsettling films are intentionally satirical or not.

Nor do we want to know. We revel in this ignorance. Starship Troopers takes its well-loved source material and skewers it so perfectly, we refuse to believe it wasn’t made that way on purpose. Starship Troopers makes you rethink every other time you’ve ever cheered for the “good guys.” It makes you question every idea that genre fiction used to take for granted: that violence done for good reasons is always ethical; that enduring hardship is always noble; that doing cruel things under order is understandable; that patriotism is worthwhile regardless of your nation’s behavior. What RoboCop asked about the relationship between corporate power and crime, Starship Troopers asks about the relationship between media power and war. Other stories have addressed these same ideas, somewhat more clumsily (I’m looking at you, Ender’s Game), but Starship Troopers is at once obvious, funny and sneaky. Watch closely; know your foe.

The scholar’s symposium this year is during Gasparilla, and it’s called “‘A Hell of Our Own’: Pirates, Sailors, and Coastal Identities in Early America,” or “Pirates!” for short. Our presenter is Dan Walden, associate professor of English at Baylor University, where he teaches classes on early American literature and culture. His research focuses on the intersection of maritime and terrestrial culture in America during the golden age of sail, and he has published in such journals as Early American Literature, Atlantic Studies, Studies in American Fiction, The Nautilus and Southern Literary Journal, among others. His current book project, Between Two Worlds: The Coast in Early American Literature, examines the representation and significance of coastal environments in American literature from the seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries.

This event is free and open to the public.

Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, one of the first works to receive the moniker of “The Great American Novel,” is epic not just in scale and theme, but in the skill of its construction. Captain Ahab’s struggle for revenge against the monstrous white whale that maimed him, told with humor and poetry and power, has riveted readers for generations. And while the 1956 adaptation was not the first version put to film – nor was it the last – it does perhaps the best job of capturing a singular feature of the novel’s composition: its taste for spectacle. Directed by Hollywood legend John Huston, written in part by Ray Bradbury, and with Gregory Peck’s bombastic performance as Ahab, it couldn’t have turned out any other way.

To the delight of fans of the American Big Bands and the Big Band era, the brassy, all-singing, all-dancing, all-American 1940s musical revue In The Mood will kick off its 22nd season on tour with TWO performances at the historic Tampa Theatre.

Hop aboard the “Chattanooga Choo Choo” to “Tuxedo Junction” and get “In The Mood” for a “Moonlight Serenade.” In the Mood is a fully staged tribute to Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Erskine Hawkins, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra and other idols of the ’40s. Complete with authentic costumes, music arrangements and choreography, In The Mood pays homage to America’s greatest generation who fought WWII. It was a time when Americans listened and boogie woogied to up-tempo big band rhythms and danced cheek-to-cheek to intimate ballads. Experience the swing, the rhythm and the jazzy, sentimental and patriotic music of this pivotal time in America’s history. In The Mood has a cast of nineteen on stage: the sensational 13-piece “String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra” and the “In The Mood Singers and Dancers” performing more than fifty unforgettable hits like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Well Get It,” “Sing, Sing Sing,” “On The Sunny Side of the Street,” and many more.

Alice Walker’s The Color Purple won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction and a National Book Award upon its release in 1983. It tells the story of Celie, born in rural Georgia in the early 1900s, a young woman who knows only cruelty for most of her life. Her world is saturated in violence and oppression; nothing good happens to her for a heart-wrenchingly long time. But the promise, the indefatigable hope of The Color Purple (and of Celie herself) is that someday, some good will come into her life. And it does, though the shape that good comes in is surprising. Director Steven Spielberg excels at telling richly human stories, and groundbreaking, explosive performances from Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover drive The Color Purple beyond the mere sentiment of the decades it spans and into epiphany.

Hunter S. Thompson was a true American original. His style of gonzo journalism, a frenetic cocktail of personal anecdotes and incisive analysis, revolutionized the way news and culture was reported by abandoning “pure” objectivism (which was never attainable anyway). He was both observer and the object of his own observation; had he not been born, the late ’60s and early ’70s would have invented him anyway.

So it stands to reason that the influence of such a character would loom so enormously over the movie based on his most popular work. Johnny Depp (a personal friend of the real Hunter S. Thompson) is, yes, just doing an HST impression for most of this movie. But his performance, along with the trippy and fantastical direction of Terry Gilliam, is exactly appropriate for the story being told: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is a meditation on the end of 1960s counterculture, a reflection on the Dali-esque melting of the American Dream – and one heck of a road trip.

Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by (part-time Tampa resident) Michael Connelly, The Lincoln Lawyer is half courtroom drama and half whodunit, with the interesting twist of an attorney who works out of his chauffeur-driven car. Tightly paced and original, with a deep and well-chosen cast, The Lincoln Lawyer ticks like clockwork from introduction to ripping conclusion. But there’s an interesting twist outside of the fiction itself as well; The Lincoln Lawyer was, to a large degree, the first step in Matthew McConaughey’s recent reinvention of himself. He went from largely playing the lead in romantic comedies like The Wedding Planner and Failure to Launch to earning an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and an Emmy nomination for True Detective. And it started right here. Who says there are no second acts in American lives?

Add to the above another great evening of entertainment, and you can’t go wrong.  Three live band performances will be featured (Kafkasso, Jah Movement Reggae Band, and the Bus Stop Band). Also, included in the evening’s entertainment lineup is a fashion show, the colorful Brazilian Samba Parade and National Anthem by Jay Rosenberg. Of course, no evening is complete without a sparkling firework display. The fireworks display is proudly sponsored by Gold & Diamond Source.

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theater. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, Dec. 16, and are available online beginning at 10 a.m., and by phone and in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales office beginning at 12 p.m. Regularly priced tickets are $31-$67. Handling fees will apply. Tickets may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Office or online.
