Tampa Downtown Partnership Elects Local Attorney as 2010-2011 Chairman
TAMPA, Fla. – (June 09, 2010) During its 24th Annual Meeting & Luncheon held today at the Tampa Convention Center, the Tampa Downtown Partnership named Mr. William “Bill” A. Gillen Jr. as its 2010-2011 chairman.
Mr. Gillen joined the Tampa Downtown Partnership in 1994 and has been instrumental in various Partnership strategic initiatives such as the organization’s involvement in the attraction of major venues to the downtown area. Mr. Gillen was asked to join the board of directors in 1995 and was later brought onto the executive committee. He has chaired the residential advisory council and the residential committee for the past two years.
Mr. Gillen is a practicing attorney with Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP where he is a trial lawyer focusing on toxic tort, products liability and environmental law matters. He has also handled medical malpractice, construction, casualty, and commercial litigation cases. Mr. Gillen was included in Florida Super Lawyers 2010. Before entering private practice, Mr. Gillen served as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1969 to 1972.
In addition to his involvement with the Tampa Downtown Partnership, Mr. Gillen has served in leadership roles with the Rotary Club of Tampa; Hillsborough Bar Association; Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America; United Way of Hillsborough County; Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay and the University Club of Tampa.
Mr. Gillen graduated with an undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA and then went on to attend law school at Florida State University. Mr. Gillen is a sought-after public speaker and accomplished author on a variety of topics relating to his expertise in the various fields of law in which he practices.
During his acceptance speech, Mr. Gillen focused on the tasks ahead for downtown Tampa and the role it will play in high speed rail, the local transportation improvement initiative before voters in November and the overall importance the downtown community serves the entire region. Mr. Gillen stressed that the Tampa Downtown Partnership will continue to be a strong voice for progress representing the entire community.

The Tampa Downtown Partnership is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)6 organization. It is a membership organization comprised of companies, organizations and individuals with a common goal of advancing downtown Tampa. Through an annual contract with the City of Tampa, the Tampa Downtown Partnership administers the Special Services District. In addition to Tampa's Downtown Guides and Clean Team, the Tampa Downtown Partnership works to promote downtown through a multitude of initiatives including marketing, business development, transportation, planning and beautification.
