Downtown Debriefing Series: The Talent Dividend Prize!

A Tampa Downtown Partnership debriefing series event with Dr. Ken Atwater (Chair, Tampa Bay's Talent Dividend initiative and President, of Hillsborough Community College) will discuss the issue of educational attainment, and the fact that it can be the biggest predictor of success for cities and metro areas today.  It has been proven that the more educated a region's population, the more robust its economy will be.  The Talent Dividend Prize is a $1 million prize to be awarded to the city or region that exhibits the greatest increase in the number of post-secondary degrees granted per one thousand population over a 4 year period and achieves its “Talent Dividend”.  The Talent Dividend Prize is offered as a joint effort by CEOs for Cities, The Kresge Foundation and Lumina Foundation for Education. Join us to learn more about the Talent Dividend as it relates to downtown Tampa and Hillsborough County and how your organization can support this initiative. The event will take place at the Tampa Club (101 East Kennedy Boulevard, Suite 4200) on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. Networking and registration with the program beginning promptly at 8:00 a.m. - Click here to register for the event

Instead of a Long Island home, this unique evening will take place in the fashionable Tampa Bay Hotel dining room. The roaring twenties will come to life as gangsters demand the password to enter through the custom designed doors to the merrymaking. Denise Moore and The Helios Swingtet will set the tone for dancing and entertainment. Black Jack and Roulette will be offered for those who feel lucky. 1920’s Menus from the Tampa Bay Hotel have been used to create food for even the most gourmet palette.

City Development & Transportation

Local Landmark Looking for a Café or Restaurant

Mayor Bob Buckhorn said, “We are long overdue for a waterfront restaurant along the river in this community”.  The City of Tampa has released a RFP (Request for Proposals) for the acquisition (long-term lease or lease with option to purchase) and redevelopment of a portion of the Water Works Building as a café or restaurant. The building is located along the east side of the Hillsborough River in the Tampa Heights area.

For a copy of the RFP package, please click here.  All interested parties are invited to submit proposals no later than 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2011 to the City of Tampa Purchasing Department, 306 E. Jackson St., Tampa, FL 33602.  For additional information, contact Urban Development Manager Michael Hatchett at (813) 274-8812 or michael.hatchett@tampagov.net.

HART Board Public Hearing

The HART Board tentatively voted to raise their millage rate from .468 to .500 (which is the cap) at their Sept. 12 hearing.  If it passes, the average household will see an annual increase in their assessment of only 41 cents.  If it does not pass, HART will look to cut $1.8M more in bus service and staffing to balance the budget.  It is important for the Board to hear from the business sector how important transit is to our community. Please attend the final public hearing on Monday, September 26 at 5:30pm at the HART Ybor Offices (1207 E. 7th Ave), 3rd Floor. If you cannot attend in person, send comments to the Board via the Board Clerk, Lena Petit @ petitl@goHART.org. Click here for more information.

Platt Street Bridge Closure

This is another reminder that the complete closure of the Platt Street Bridge for 105 days will occur on October 3. There is a community information meeting scheduled for Sept. 27 @6pm at the Freedman Tennis Court Center, 59 Columbia Dr. on Davis Islands. For road detour options, click here. You can also explore whether a HART bus route might be a more productive use of your time while sitting in the expected congestion. Click here for a flyer detailing their routes.

Let’s Build A Playground!

The City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department is building a playground and they are seeking 100 volunteers to assist in a community build day beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 at Cuscaden Park, located at 2900 N. 15th  Street. The children residing in the VM (Vicente Martinez) Ybor neighborhood, where Cuscaden Park is located, began planning their new playground in August when a professional playground designer from KaBoom!, a national non-profit organization whose mission is to create great play spaces, met with the children to find out what they wanted in their own play space.  We invite you to be one of the volunteers who will build these children a new playground on one monumental day. No previous building experience is necessary. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. To volunteer, please contact: Julio Barrera at (813) 274-5188 or email: Julio.Barrera@tampagov.net.
